Today, April 1st, 2025, AfriTAL took a significant step in its mission to promote transparency and accountability in environmental governance by organizing a One-Day Research Workshop and Sensitization on Methane Abatement at the GC-BIL Hall, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The event brought together 22 participants, including MSc and PhD students, to discuss the impact of methane emissions and the ongoing efforts to mitigate them. A striking revelation during the session was that less than 50% of the attendees had prior knowledge of methane, highlighting the need for greater awareness and education on this critical environmental issue.
Introducing the Methane Abatement Project
As part of the workshop, I had the privilege of introducing the Methane Abatement Project, detailing its implementation and the progress made so far. This initiative aligns with AfriTAL’s commitment to advocating for responsible environmental practices, particularly in the oil and gas sector, where methane emissions significantly contribute to climate change.
Encouraging Research and Sustainable Waste Management
Dr. Asawo, a distinguished speaker at the workshop, urged the participants to delve deeper into research on methane, emphasizing its environmental implications. He also stressed the importance of recycling waste and proper waste disposal as key strategies in mitigating methane emissions.
Additionally, Mrs. Peter-Kio provided insights into the Methane Abatement in Nigeria Project, shedding light on ongoing national efforts to curb emissions and implement sustainable environmental policies.
The workshop not only enlightened participants about methane and its impact but also inspired them to take proactive steps in their respective fields. AfriTAL remains committed to fostering responsible leadership and environmental sustainability through advocacy, research, and policy engagement.
This event underscores the urgent need for more conversations and initiatives on methane abatement, particularly in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. By raising awareness and encouraging research, we can drive meaningful change towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
